Description

“We do not count the Bodies”

Michelangelo’s masterpiece “La Pieta” is interpreted in a modern context and rendered with the words “We do not count the bodies.” written in jail diwani Arabic calligraphy.
“We do not count the bodies” is an almost standard US Government official response, when asked about the number of civilian casualties in Iraq, Afghanistan and other US engaged conflicts, it can be attributed to Generals Franks, Schwarzkopf, and Sec. of State Donald Rumsfeld and numerous other state department officials.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsynzin once observed; “Every man is the center of a universe.” Every life lost is a world ended, can we at least be bothered to count them?
The original of this piece from which these prints are made was created in 2012, but only publicly exhibited for the first time this past summer at Agial Art Gallery in the solo exhibition “Rules and how they are broken”.
